Vibration syndrome (HAVS) claims

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome/Vibration White Finger

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a condition commonly caused by frequent use of hand held vibrating power tools, for example, chainsaws, pneumatic drills, air powered tools, jackhammers, etc. It is thought that the vibrations from the tools cause injuries to the nerves and blood vessels in the fingers.

HAVS is preventable but, once the damage is done, the effects are often permanent.

The Health Service Executive have listed early symptoms of HAVS as including:-

  • Tingling and numbness in your fingers
  • Loss of strength in your hands
  • Loss of feeling in your fingers
  • In the cold and wet, the tips of your fingers going white then red and being painful on recovery

Employers have a legal duty to protect their employees against HAVS, for example, by keeping tools maintained, rotating tasks and limiting the amount of exposure.

If you have been diagnosed with HAVS then you may be able to bring a claim for compensation against your employer or former employer.

It is often still possible to bring a claim for compensation against a company that no longer exists.

Because of legal time limits for bringing claims for compensation it is important that you seek legal advice promptly.
